ABOUT ALEX NUTTALL

Alex Nuttall was born in 1985 in Liverpool, England. Shortly thereafter, his family immigrated to Canada and moved to Barrie in 1989, where he has since resided. Alex grew up in government subsidized housing, which is where he learnt at a young age that a strong work ethic in our country could create endless opportunities.

He graduated from St. Peter’s High School, and attended Redeemer and Laurentian Universities, where he studied Political Science. He first became interested in Barrie City politics through his volunteer work, some of which included youth programs, fundraising with the YMCA, soccer coach for Barrie Minor Soccer Association & St. Peter’s Catholic High School, as well as a Christmas Cheer Volunteer.

On November 13th, 2006 at the age of 21, Alex was elected to Barrie City Council, where he represented Barrie’s Ward 10 from 2006 to 2014. Having grown up in Ward 10 for 16 years, Alex lived through the consistent growth that occurred and changed the face of the Ward. He would say that his strong work ethic and response to residents’ concerns is what got him a second term. In 2010, he won with the highest number of votes received by a single candidate in Barrie’s history.

In his role as City Councillor, Alex advocated for lower taxes and greater accountability of taxpayers’ hard earned dollars. He was committed to accountability of resources, integrity in office, and accessibility to the public. These values became fundamental to his character, and continue with him to this day.

In his private sector career, Alex worked in the financial industry in Barrie from 2009 to 2015, where he was most recently a Commercial Account Manager providing sound fiscal advice, strong personal service and client-focused results. This brought a strong fiscal background to the Council table for the residents of Ward 10 and throughout the City.

On October 19th 2015, Alex was elected to represent Barrie–Springwater–Oro-Medonte in the House of Commons as their Member of Parliament. On November 20, 2015, Alex was appointed as the Official Opposition Critic for Economic Development for Southern Ontario. On April 8, 2016, Alex also proudly accepted the role of Official Opposition Critic for the new Sharing Economy, as well as Deputy Critic for Innovation, Science and Economic Development. On August 30, 2017, he was named Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Youth, Sports, and Persons with Disabilities.

Alex is also a proud husband to wife Erica, and father of two young children, Caleb and Anabella.
