After nine years of Justin Trudeau, life has never been so hard for Canadians. Food will cost families $700 more this year than it did in 2023, and millions of Canadians are having to line up outside of food banks just to survive.
The scale of the economic misery that this NDP-Liberal government has unleashed was revealed again by Statistics Canada’s report into food insecurity. This showed that nearly 15.6 percent of Canadians experienced food insecurity in 2022, up from 11.6 percent in 2018 and 9.6 percent in 2017. This means that the rate of food-insecure Canadians had increased by over 60 percent over the course of two years.
This became worse in 2024, made clear through Food Banks Canada’s 2024 Poverty Report Card, showing that almost 50 percent of Canadians feel financially worse off compared to last year while 25 percent of Canadians are experiencing food insecurity. Across the country, food banks have seen a 50 percent increase in visits since 2021.
Here in British Columbia, the province received a grade of D+ for the second year in a row.
This is a direct consequence of the NDP-Liberal government’s inflationary tax and spend agenda and their cruel carbon tax. When you tax the farmer who grows the food, and the trucker who ships the food, you end up taxing the family who buys the food. Despite this, Jagmeet Singh and Justin Trudeau both voted to hike the carbon tax by 23 percent earlier this year.
As Sylvain Charlebois, Director of Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab has said, the costly NDP-Liberal carbon tax "likely adds a significant cost burden to the Canadian food industry."
Canadians shouldn’t have to live like this. Only Common Sense Conservatives will axe the tax, fix the budget and bring home lower prices for all Canadians.
